{"id":1215,"date":"2006-12-02T17:26:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-02T17:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lingula.org.uk\/wordpress\/2006\/12\/02\/it-was-20-years-ago-today-2\/"},"modified":"2006-12-02T17:26:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-02T17:26:00","slug":"it-was-20-years-ago-today-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lingula.org.uk\/wordpress\/2006\/12\/02\/it-was-20-years-ago-today-2\/","title":{"rendered":"It was 20 years ago today&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On this day in 1986 a momentous happening occured:<\/p>\n<p>The SEND command was removed from use on the original EUCLID system by<br \/>\nUniversity College Computer Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The SEND command was used greatly by the undergraduate community via the<br \/>\nMISC.YAP and POOL.GOODYAP talking programs and it was a hard blow to us<br \/>\nhacker types.<\/p>\n<p>So, independently, Alec and I wrote within the day basic replacements for<br \/>\nthe talking programs which no-longer worked. I produced POOL.CONVERSE and<br \/>\nAlec POOL.CONFLAB. Subsiquent to this first day, we got together, along with<br \/>\nRobert Newson and made our programs work together.
